Product Information

Also known as a throw out bearing, a common replacement when installing a new clutch

The clutch release bearing is housed within your BMW's transmission bell housing. It sits and is located on a "guide tube" which surrounds the input shaft of the transmission. When you push the clutch pedal down; the slave cylinder forces the shift fork to push the release bearing into the pressure plate. This action allows for you to shift with the transmission disengaged.

It is a common and recommended practice to replace this component when installing a new clutch. However, it is possible for the release bearing to fail before the clutch needs replacement. If you hear a whining or squealing noise when the clutch pedal is pushed to the floor as you are shifting it typically means the release bearing has gone bad and needs to be replaced.

Clutch Release Bearing

A clutch release bearing also known as a throw-out bearing is an essential part of a manual transmission’s clutch system. It enables the smooth engagement and disengagement of the clutch by allowing the clutch pedal’s force to be transferred to the clutch pressure plate. When the clutch pedal is pressed, the release bearing pushes against the pressure plate, disengaging the clutch and allowing you to shift gears.

Clutch Release Bearing Failure Symptoms

  • Clutch Slippage: In severe cases, a failing release bearing can contribute to clutch slippage, where the clutch does not fully engage, causing a loss of power transmission and difficulty accelerating
  • Difficulty Shifting Gears: If the bearing is worn, it may not fully disengage the clutch, making it harder to shift gears smoothly and increasing the likelihood of grinding between gears
  • Noises When Depressing the Clutch Pedal: A failing release bearing often produces squealing, chirping, or grinding noises when the clutch pedal is pressed. These sounds may reduce or disappear when the pedal is released

About Sachs

ZF Sachs AG, also known as Fichtel & Sachs was founded in Schweinfurt in 1895 and was a well-known German family business. At its last point as an independent company, the company name was Fichtel & Sachs AG. In 1997, the automotive supplier was taken over by Mannesmann and renamed Mannesmann Sachs AG. As of 2001, Sachs belonged to ZF Friedrichshafen as a subsidiary company ZF Sachs AG. In 2011, ZF Sachs, like other Group subsidiaries, was legally merged with ZF Friedrichshafen AG and the independent business units integrated into the ZF divisions. Sachs has since become a brand of ZF Friedrichshafen AG.

Sachs is a trusted brand of the ZF family, which includes Lemforder, TRW, Boge, Stabilus, ZF parts and Sachs Performance.
